If looks could kill, Atticus's dad would drop dead in an instant. His father had just told him that they needed to stop by the grocery store on the way home. Atticus hated it when this happened, so he crossed his arms and glared in protest.
"Look, we'll be in and out in just five minutes," His father said, trying to reason with him. "Five minutes is all."
"You really can't just drop me off at home before you go? It's just down the road!" Atticus said. He was eager to spend his weekend time relaxing after a long and sleep deprived school week.
"No. End of conversation." His father responded. Atticus knew bettert han to keep talking when his father said "End of cnversation." He sat and and shifted his gaze. He didn't stop flaring at the dashboard until they pulled into the parking lot of the grocery store.
Once inside, Atticus folowed his dad around as he skimmed the isles and picked up the food items for the week. The rounded a corner and started to walk down the snack an soda isle. Atticus's dad abruptly stopped the cart and Atticus ran into his dad and stumbled backwards.
"EDGE?" His father said.
"What are you talking about?" Atticus said, regaining his footing. He walked around his father and looked at the shelf. In the long row of boxes of cans, there was a large gap with a single can sitting in the middle. It was electirc blue, with the word EDGE in a rough font printed diagonally across the can.
"That's funny," Atticus said. "I've never seen that before." Atticus squeezed between the cart and the shelf. He picked up the can and read the back. He saw the normal stuff, the nutrition facts, ingredients. No contact number though.
"Must be pretty popular if there's only one can left. Let's try it out." Atticus's father said as he took the can from Atticus and placed it in the cart. He pushed the cart along.
Atticus sighed in relief when his father finally said that they could head to check out. When they got in the car, Atticus's father reached into the back seat and grabbed te can of EDGE and popped open the cap. The hiss of carbination told Atticus that it was a type of soda.
"Well, bottoms up," Atticus's father said as he took a long sip. His expressions went from curious to confusion to surprise. "That's good! Here, wanna try?" He held out the can for Atticus, and he grabbed it. He took a whiff and the scent made his eyes water.
"It smells alcoholic. I don't think I can have this." Atticus said.
"It's probably fine. Go ahead." His father said. Atticus shook his head. After all it was suspicious that the drink had appeared on shelves overnight. Not to mention that there wasn't any info on who had created it or how to contact them.
"More for me then," His father said as he took the can and drank the rest on the way home. The pulled into the drive way and once Atticus got inside, his father walked over to his mother and told her that he needed to head out real quick. It seemed strange to atticus. He payed no attention to it though.
Atticus headed to his bedroom and opened his computer and started his daily youtube binge. As he clicked on his seventh video, he heard a famiiar ding that signaled ssomeone had messaged him through a browser group chat. He pause the video and switched tabs.
Come outside. Bring your bike.
